More than 80% of the community is of Gwich'in decent. we then will take a small tour to the grave site of the northwest mounted police, click here (lost patrol of 1910-11).
Corporal jack dempster led the patrol and the highway is named after him.

The community has a population of 900 people , a very friendly community and is where our guide Lawrence was born, so interaction with the community members is most likely to happen and to experience the culture of the gwich'in who live off the land at "8 mile" which is at our second ferry crossing , we may connect WITH THE LOCAL people and local culture AND EXPERIENCE THERE WAY OF LIVING , hunting and fishing and trying to keep there cultures alive.
We then cross the peel river which is a tributary of the mackenzie river in the yukon and nwt ,it's source is in the ogilvie mountains in the central yukon at the confluence of the ogilvie river and blackstone river.
making our way into the richardson mountains we come to midway lake where the local people from fort mcpherson have small cabins and use them for hunting and weekend outings and where we have a cabin also for warming, rest and meals, also if the weather is foul we can warm up and wait for it to pass .fROM here we head to the nwt/yukon border which is one of the higher peaks on our journey ,with photo ops we then press on to the arctic circle monument where we take a short break for more arctic circle photo opportunities .
on our last stretch of the the day we ride the last few miles to the eagle plains lodge ,this is where we will be staying for the night .
we end the day with a supper and reflection on the day and the spectacular scenery and mountain ranges we just navigated through .

day 4 - 405km
